| INTRODUCTION |
| The Amsterdam Mall is a marvelously well-preserved, multi-level, 1970’s era mall in the centre of Amsterdam, NY, USA. It was constructed as part of a Robert Moses-inspired urban renewal project by the State of New York, iIts design reminiscent of 1970s and 80s era malls throughout the Northeast US, most of which are now demolished and lost to history. |
| For those who lived through this era, the heroically preserved interior spaces – barren but definitely not blighty – inspire nostalgic memories of shopping and strolling, sipping Orange Julius and tossing coins into the decorative fountains, amidst the brown, orange and yellow interior spaces, accented by wood panelling, faux brick, stone, water features and live plants flourishing in strategically sunlit spaces. |
| At the time of writing and photographing in 2014, many original features such as signage and design accents were preserved and in good shape, despite the surrounding areas of the city suffering from significant urban contraction, abandonment and blight. |
